Research Study for Adults with Autism

Young woman is reading book

About the Research

This study seeks to understand the views of adults with autism on the role of reading in their lives, research on reading, and how they were taught to read. Participants will have the opportunity to share their unique perspectives through the use of an online survey, and if they wish, participate in an email interview. The online design of the data collection provides flexible opportunities for participants to receive and share information.

Who Can Participate?

Eligible participants must be:

  • Willing to self-report having a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Condition, Asperger’s Syndrome or Pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified; participants who are both speaking and non-speaking are welcome
  • 18 years or older
  • Able to access technology including internet and a smartphone, tablet or computer

What’s Involved?

  • Participants will be asked to answer multiple choice and open-ended survey questions.
  • Following completion of the survey, participants will be invited to voluntarily provide their email address should they be interested in participating in a semi-structured email interview which will be based on their survey responses.
  • Participants can respond to questions at a time that is most convenient to them.
  • Anticipated time to complete the survey is 20-25 minutes and 10-15 minutes for the interview.
  • Participation in the survey and follow-up interview is completely optional. Participants may decline to answer any questions that they do not feel comfortable answering and can end participation in the study at any time prior to final submission.
  • Participants’ choice to participate in the research or not, will not affect the services they get from any of the agencies which are doing the recruitment.
