Dr. Piasta and colleagues awarded grant to translate research into school-based practice

Funded through the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, this collaborative project will examine the impact of a language-focused reading intervention provided to first graders who may benefit from language-focused instruction – and will follow their language and reading comprehension skills through third grade. The anticipated total funding amount is $3.5 million across all sites and years of the project.

WHO:

Co-principal investigators are Dr. Tiffany Hogan at Massachusetts General Hospital Institutes of Health Professions and Dr. Shayne Piasta from Ohio State; co-investigators are Dr. Mindy Bridges, University of Kansas Medical Center and Dr. Kandace Fleming, University of Kansas.

WHAT:

The project, Translating research into school-based practice via small-group, language focused comprehension intervention, will involve a randomized controlled trial to examine the effects of an early evidence-based language and comprehension intervention designed to help children who may most benefit from these strategies. The project builds off of prior work from the Language and Reading Research Consortium, of which Drs. Piasta, Hogan, and Bridges were members.

WHEN:

The project is funded from January 2021 through December 2025.

We are excited to embark on this new study of language-focused reading intervention, especially for children most likely to benefit from this instruction. While we have made great strides in supporting aspects of early reading related to cracking the code, it is just as important to support skills related to language and comprehension. We hope that this work will contribute to evidence-based practices and help teachers in facilitating children’s reading success.
