Special event brings together pediatricians and early educators

Last month, the Crane Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital brought Dr. Moira Szilagyi, the 2022 president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, for a special event about the intersection of healthcare and early education.

Dr. Szilagyi highlighted the unique roles that pediatricians and early educators have in the lives of families with young children. This access requires sensitivity to family experiences as well as being tuned into what each family needs and wants for their children. Because of this, the possibility of working across systems is ripe with opportunities to help improve outcomes for all children.

Dr. Szilagyi shared examples of coordination across systems of care in Ohio to highlight great work already underway. She also spoke about her own experience coordinating systems of care during her career in Rochester, New York and discussed what components she sees as critical to the success of working across sectors.

Speaking about the science behind brain development during the earliest years of life, Dr. Szilagyi discussed the impact of trauma on young children’s developing brains. She urged both healthcare and education practitioners to use a trauma-informed lens to deliver care and services to families that support responsive relationships, reduce stressors, and strengthen core skills. Trauma-informed care also recognizes the important of resiliency.

Dr. Szilagyi reminded the group that resiliency is a skill that can be developed through the right environments, relationships, and opportunities. And when done in the early years through nurturing, safe care, the return on investment is significant for each child, their family, and their community.
