Crane Policy Chat: Child Care in Rural Communities
A conversation with Dr. Shoshanah Inwood
Safe and reliable child care is an ongoing issue impacting our workforce, our economy, the kindergarten readiness of young children, and… our nation’s farmers and food production. That’s right, farmers are among those significantly impacted when they cannot access child care, and a growing share of U.S. farmers are women, who take on disproportionate caregiving duties and thus have been affected most when lacking access for their children.
Join the Crane Center for a virtual conversation with Dr. Shoshanah Inwood, associate professor of rural sociology in Ohio State’s School of Environment and Natural Resources, for a conversation and Q&A about the recent U.S. Farm Bill and rural child care challenges. This major federal legislation defines the nation’s food production policy and federal assistance for farmers, and its inclusion of child care as a priority is historic. If passed, the bill will open access to rural child care options for U.S. farmers and could pave the way for future proposals to prioritize child care. Dr. Inwood, a former farmer herself, will share about her research that brought this systemic issue to the forefront of national conversations as well as about her role in helping the U.S. Congress understand its importance.

Who is this policy chat for?
Anyone interested in child care access, rural communities, U.S. farming, women’s issues, or policy/legislation. Students, researchers, policy makers, members of the media, all are welcome to join. This chat will offer policy insights related to child care and farming – particularly but not limited to an Ohio context – as well as practical insights on how researchers can engage policy makers effectively, as Dr. Inwood has done.
What will the hour-long chat be like?
This is a new series we are piloting and is meant to be engaging and interactive as we center around policy issues in early childhood. Guests will share their insights, research, or expertise in a conversational format that resembles a podcast, with key questions guiding the chat. Crane associate director of policy and external affairs Jamie O’Leary will facilitate the conversation with Dr. Inwood. Participants will be encouraged to test their knowledge on the topic through live poll questions, and will have ample opportunity to offer comments, ask questions, and consider ways they can apply insights or lessons.
