Millions awarded to expand early childhood research, practice, and policy

Man in a blue shirt, blurred in the background, holds a light bulb made to look like it is lit up with ideas floating around.

In 2023, the Schoenbaum and Crane Centers were awarded 16 new grants totaling $10.4 million from institutions including the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Child Health, and Human Services, National Institute on Deaf and Other Communication Disorders, and the Administration of Family Services. These awards allow us to make new discoveries on key topics, such as:

  • Examining media use and its impacts on language development in young children;
  • Enhancing caregiver implementation of a proven early-literacy intervention that supports language in children with developmental language disorders;
  • Capturing Early Head Start teachers’ behavior management skills; and
  • Understanding the experiences of children and enrolled in Early Head Start both before and after the pandemic.

These awards also fund ongoing projects on key topics like developing vocabulary, interventions for children with severe disabilities, peer-networks within the classroom and more. For a look at Crane’s ongoing research projects, check out our project pages.
