Striving Readers

About the Project

The Ohio Department of Education awarded $33 million in three-year grants aimed to improve literacy outcomes for children birth through grade 12. Specifically, these Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy Grants focused on serving students experiencing poverty as well as students with disabilities, English-language learners, and students who might benefit from extra support in reading development.

These sub-grants were a part of a $35 million Striving Readers Comprehensive Literacy Grant awarded from the U.S. Department of Education, and through a competitive peer-reviewed application process, approximately 95% of the award was distributed directly to local schools or early childhood providers to improve literacy outcomes for students.

The Schoenbaum Family Center partnered with Greene County Educational Service Center and Madison-Champaign Educational Service Center to form the Ohio State Research Foundation Consortium. This Consortium was awarded a portion of this grant to improve language and literacy outcomes for children birth to age five.

      • Literacy coaching with reflective feedback
      • Participation in a professional learning community

Professional Development Modules

Through the comprehensive literacy grant, the Ohio State Research Foundation Consortium created new, high-quality professional development modules to help educators improve their practice. These modules are available free of charge.

645 students impacted, including 106 who had disabilities and 220 who came from economically disadvantaged homes

New Read It Again! Infant and Toddler curriculum created by Crane researchers

Sustained literacy impacts by increasing teacher knowledge and improving instruction through evidence-based practices
